Today’s Winning Word features ABIDE. I chose this word because students on Reddit are reporting that it was an answer for a vocabulary in context question on their March-April School Days SAT tests. So, I am ABIDING by my rule of only featuring REAL words!
US History provides a number of very good examples of ABIDE. In 1800, John Adams and the Federalists lost to Thomas Jefferson. Rather than sparking a coup, the Federalists chose to ABIDE by the democratic results, marking the first peaceful transfer of power between opposing parties in U.S. history.
It is important to note that ABIDE can also be illustrated by its opposite. For example, in 1955, Rosa Parks famously refused to ABIDE by the Montgomery city ordinance requiring Black passengers to give up their seats to white passengers.
