ACCLAIM – In the movie Gladiator, Maximus has just led his fellow gladiators to an unexpected victory against the Emperor’s heavily favored charioteers. Fascinated by this mysterious, brilliant tactician known only as “The Spainard,” Emperor Commodus descends from the royal box onto the area floor to meet him face-to-face. EXHIBIT – Surrounded by his elite Praetorian Guard, Commodus addresses the masked gladiator, praising his combat skills and demanding to know his real name. But Maximus does not EXHIBIT or reveal the expected respect to the Emperor. Instead, he initially tries to hide his face and coldly replies, “My name is Gladiator.”
TANTAMOUNT – Maximus’s decision to turn his back to the Emperor is TANTAMOUNT or equivalent to an insult punishable by death. Stung by this blatant act of defiance. Commodus demands that the still-anonymous gladiator take off his helmet and reveal his true name.
MEASURED – Maximus stops, turns slowly, and pulls off his spiked iron helmet. Looking Commodus directly in the eyes, he delivers a MEASURED or carefully restrained but still defiant statement: “My name is Maximus Decimus Maridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant of the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”
VACILLATE – Commodus is visibly stunned. He believed Maximus had been executed in Germania. But now he realizes that his greatest rival is alive and standing a few feet away with a weapon. As the Praetorian Guard draws their swords, Commodus VACILLATES or wavers unsure what to do.
LATITUDE – Commodus is an all-powerful ruler. He has the LATITUDE or freedom to act as he sees fit. He could order Praetorian Guard to immediately execute Maximus. But he is restrained by the Colosseum crowd erupting in chants of “Maximus! Maximus!” Realizing that the Roman crowd has fully embraced the gladiator as their hero, Commodus is trapped. He is reluctantly forced to give a “thumbs up,” sparring Maximus’s life for a day!
