APUSH
The Erie Canal opened in 1825. The canal sparked a dramatic increase in commerce that brought new trade and prosperity to canal cities such as Schenectady, Syracuse, and Rochester. But New York City quickly emerged as the canal’s biggest BENEFICIARY. Within a short time, New York city developed into America’s foremost center of commerce and banking. New York thus became a leading part of the commercial revolution transforming America’s economy.
SAT
Palenque and Caracol are Mayan cities renowned for their monumental temples. However, the builders in both cities were BENEFICARIES of the innovations of architects who worked in earlier cities.
It is important to note that Palenque and Caracol were not ARCHETYPES or REPLICAS of the earlier Mayan cities. An ARCHETYPE is an original model of something from which others are derived. A REPLICA is an exact copy or model of something.
