South Korea’s BTS now ranks as the world’s most popular Boy Band. But back in 2000, a generation of American boy bands VIED or competed for the hearts of fans. At that time, the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC dominated pop music with a succession of hit songs. Let’s turn back the clock and take a special SAT vocabulary look at NSYNC performing “Tearin’ Up My Heart” before a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden.
CONFOUNDED – The song’s opening verse captures NSYNC’s intense emotional turmoil when the guys urgently declare: “Baby, I don’t understand just why we can’t be lovers.” Their seemingly hopeless situation leaves NSYNC feeling CONFOUNDED or totally confused as they realize, “Things are getting out of hand.”
PRECARIOUS – NSYNC is caught in a PRECARIOUS or unstable emotional limbo. Feeling trapped, the guys cry out that they “can’t take it anymore.” They are literally down on their knees begging the girl to “let me know” where things stand between them.
AMBIVALENCE – The song’s chorus captures NSYNC’s emotional AMBIVALENCE or mixed feelings “It’s tearin’ up my heart when I’m with you.” Caught in an emotional lose-lose situation, the guys also feel pain “when we are apart. And no matter what I do, I feel the pain, with or without you.”
MISCONSTRUED – The NSYNC guys don’t want their feelings to be MISCONSTRUED or misunderstood. They desperately try to remove any confusion by declaring, “Don’t misunderstand what I’m tryin’ to tell you.” Realizing that their girl may continue to MISCONSTRUE their feelings, NSYNC warns, “It feels like we’re running out of time.”
CAPRICIOUS – The song doesn’t resolve NSYNC’s emotional dilemma. Although NSYNC urges the girl to “let me know,” she is a CAPRICIOUS or fickle and unpredictable romantic partner. I’m not hopeful things will work out. Even though
NSYNC is doing everything they can to keep the connection, the relationship is falling apart.
