CONSONANCE is an adjective that can be used to describe the harmonious combination of images and music. For example, famous “I’m flying!” scene in the movie Titanic takes place on the forward tip of the ship during a golden ocean sunset. Jack holds Kate’s waist from behind to keep her balanced. The CONSONANT or harmonious image builds to a soaring and unforgettable moment as Celine Dion sings, “Love can touch us one time and last for a lifetime.”
SAT test writers are aware of how movies can create CONSONANCE between images and music. Although they have yet to use the scene from Titanic, they have described the “rhythmic intercutting” between image and music in the experimental film Koyaanisqatsi. All in all, I prefer the indelible CONSONANCE in Titanic!
