ELUDE made its debut as a One Hit Wonder on a vocabulary in context question that appeared on both the International and the US September 12, 2026 SATs. ELUDE means out of reach in the sense of escaping the perception or grasp of the mind.
The September 2026 question began by noting that mathematicians posed the Camron-Erdos conjecture in 1988. Finding a logical proof of the puzzle ELUDED mathematicians the next 15 years. However, finding the correct answer to the vocabulary in context question did not ELUDE most students. Test-takers correctly eliminated DEFAMED (to harm someone’s reputation) and EPITOMIZE (an ideal example) as incorrect detractors.
