A POLITY is any politically organized group sharing a collective identity. Examples include city-states, nation-states, and empires.
I can confirm that POLITY has appeared as an answer on a recent SAT. It is therefore a new member of our collection of One Hit Wonders! Unfortunately, I do not know anything about the vocabulary in context question which featured POLITY as an answer – bummer!
POLITY is not difficult to illustrate. For example, the Articles of Confederation created a new POLITY or recognized American political entity. However, because it prioritized state sovereignty over central authority, the new POLITY proved too weak to effectively resolve interstate economic conflicts or handle domestic crises such as Shays’ Rebellion. This weakness prompted statesmen to gather at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787 to replace the Articles of Confederation with the stronger federal POLITY created by the current United States Constitution.
