PREVAIL means to gain a special advantage and emerge victorious. It regularly appears in stories about international affairs and sporting events. For example, will the United States or Iran PREVAIL in the struggle to control the Straits of Hormuz? Or which team will PREVAIL in this year’s NFL season?

SAT test writers have yet to create a vocabulary in context question about either a contemporary political crisis or a professional sporting event. But they have created a series of at least 4 vocabulary in context questions that use PREVAIL as a correct answer. Let’s take a close look:
