SUPERFICIAL – The “Dance the Night” scene in Barbie is one of the most memorable moments in the film. It perfectly pivots the movie from a lighthearted and SUPERFICIAL or shallow fantasy into a probing explanation of human vulnerability and the meaning of life. Let’s take a close look:
UTOPIA – Barbie lives in Barbie Land, a magical UTOPIA or perfect world surrounded by a heart-shaped pink border. Barbie’s all-pink world appears to be vibrant and flawless. But outward appearances are deceiving.
TEDIOUS – Barbie Land is all about having carefree fun. Life is never TEDIOUS or tiresome and boring. Barbie often hosts elaborate parties where she and a diverse array of Barbies and Kens dance the night away. Barbie happily proclaims that each day “is the best day ever. So was yesterday, and so is tomorrow, and every day from now until forever.”
METICULOUS – The entire scene takes place inside Stereotypical Barbie’s Dreamhouse, where she throws a massive, glitzy party. All the various Barbies and Kens are dressed in matching silver, gold, and white disco-inspired outfits. Set to Dua Lipa’s upbeat track “Dance the Night,” the entire group performs a METICULOUS or perfectly choreographed dance routine.
VIE – Ryan Gosling’s Ken and Simu Liu’s Ken VIE or compete to impress Barbie by busting their dance moves. Although both Kens are impressive, I think this round goes to Simu Liu’s Ken!
A PROFOUND question – PROFOUND or deep questions about the meaning of life are the last things the Barbies want to hear. But Stereotypical Barbie suddenly interrupts her party by asking, “Do you guys ever think about dying?’ Barbie’s unexpected but PROFOUND question brings the dance to an abrupt halt. The entire room freezes as all the Barbies and Kens look at her in absolute horrified silence.
RESILIENCE – On the surface, “Dance the Night” sounds like an upbeat party anthem. But listen carefully to the lyrics. They actually hold z deeper meaning about emotional RESILIENCE or the ability to overcome adversity. The narrator explains that even when her world is crashing down and her heart is breaking, she tries to maintain an upbeat appearance. The deeper truth is that Barbie is actually using the dance floor as a coping mechanism for her inner turmoil about the meaning of her life.
BONUS POINT: Warner Bros’ budgeted $100 million to produce Barbie and another $150 million to market the movie. If the film failed, it had the potential to bankrupt the studio and doom director Greta Gerwig’s career. But Barbie’s overwhelming success VINDICATED Warner’s confidence in Gerwig’s judgment and skill. The movie smashed box office records to become the studio’s highest grossing film of all time. Gerwig became the first woman to solo direct a billion-dollar movie!
