STIPULATE means to specify, demand, or require. STIPULATE is a very versatile word. SAT test writers recently used it to point out that historical preservation committees usually do not provide builders with “vague guidelines.” Instead, they typically provide strict STIPULATIONS about alterations to landmark buildings.
STIPULATE can also be applied to a number of APUSH examples. For example, following the end of the French and Indian War and the outbreak of Pontiac’s Rebellion, King George III issued a royal proclamation that explicitly STIPULATED British colonists were forbidden from settling west of a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains. Designed to prevent costly Indian wars, this STIPULATION deeply angered colonial land speculators and frontiersmen who felt entitled to exploit the newly acquired territory. This became the first of many grievances that led to the American revolution.
