DISPARITY – The iconic “This is Sparta” scene in the movie The 300 takes place in Sparta in 480 BCE. At that time a vast DISPARITY or difference existed between Persia and Sparta. Led by the God-King Xerxes I, the Persian Empire dominated a vast region that included 2 million square miles and 50 million people. In contrast, Sparta was a small Greek city-state led by King Leonidas. Xerxes vowed to crush the Spartans and add them to his empire.
ANNIHILATION – When the scene opens, a Persian messenger and a retinue of soldiers arrive in Sparta. The envoy brings a grim display of the skulls of conquered kings. He meets King Leonidas in a public squire where he demands “earth and water” as symbolic tokens of submission to Xerxes. He warns Leonidas that Xerxes’ army is “so massive it shakes the ground with its march. So vast it drinks rivers dry.” Resistance to Xerxes will bring absolute ANNIHILATION or complete destruction to Sparta.
CAPITULATE and HAUGHTY – Leonidas understands that the Persian envoy is demanding that he CAPITULATE or surrender to Xerxes. But for the proud Spartan king, “submission is a bit of a problem.” Confident in his power over the seemingly inferior Spartans, the HAUGHTY or disdainfully proud Persian ominously warns, “Choose your next words carefully, Leonidas. They may be your last as king.”
LATITUDE – As king, Leonidas has the LATITUDE or freedom to make his decision. Led by Athens, some Greek city-states have already vowed to resist the Persians. But others thought it wiser to submit “earth and water.” Faced with a far-reaching decision, Leonidas carefully weighs his options.
UNEQUIVOCAL – Leonidas now looks over at wife, Queen Gorgo. With a subtle nod, she signals her silent approval to defend their honor. Leonidas then draws his sword and points it at the messenger’s throat. Shocked, the emissary protests, crying out, “This is madness!” Leonidas then lowers his sword, takes a deep breath and famously roars his UNEQUIVOCAL or definite answer: “Madness? This is Sparta!”
PRECLUDE – The scene now suddenly moves to a dramatic and fateful climax. With a powerful kick in the chest, Leonidas sends the Persian messenger hurling backward into a giant, bottomless pit in the center of the courtyard. The Spartan soldiers instantly follow his lead, shoving the rest of the Persian retinue down into the dark abyss. This action PRECLUDES or prevents any reconciliation between Sparta and Xerxes. Leonidas has effectively declared war on the Persian Empire.
