The movie Ghostbusters debuted in 1984 and promptly became a huge box office hit. Also named “Ghostbusters,” the film’s lead song quickly rose to the top of the music charts. The song has a particularly catchy funk-inspired beat and easily remembered lyrics that can be used to provide vivid illustrations of high-frequency SAT vocabulary words. Let’s take a look:
ANOMALIES – An ANOMALY is a deviation from what is normal or expected. What could be more ANOMALOUS than seeing “something strange in your neighborhood or experiencing “something weird?”
UNNERVING – Strange sights and weird experiences are UNNERVING or unsettling disruptions of everyday life.
PERVASIVE – But wait! Are paranormal experiences a figment of people’s imaginations? Or are they PERVASIVE or widespread experiences that affect a large number of people? A recent opinion poll found that 64 percent of adult Americans said they believe in at least one kind of paranormal or supernatural phenomenon. In addition, about 20 percent of adult Americans claim to have personally experienced a ghostly encounter!
VACILLATE – The song insists that the solution to dealing with phantom entities is obvious: don’t VACILLATE or be indecisive. Haunted people should immediately “pick up the phone and call Ghostbusters!”
IMPERVIOUS – The professional team of Ghostbusters are IMPERVIOUS or unaffected by fear. They “ain’t afraid of no ghosts!” In fact, ghostbusting makes them “feel good!” So once again, don’t VACILLATE – call Ghostbusters immediately!!
