The August 22, 2026 US and International SATs contained a vocabulary in context question that featured VULNERABILITY as the correct answer. A VULNERABILITY describes a situation in which someone is exposed to the possibility of harm. Interestingly, the word derives from the Latin word vulness, which means “wound.”
SAT test writers chose to illustrate VULNERABILITY by focusing on a group of rocks known as rare earth minerals. These metallic elements play crucial roles in modern electronics, clean energy, and defense systems. They are especially important in the production of magnets that are used in our cell phones.
Despite their name, rare earth minerals are not actually rare. They are called ‘rare” because they are seldom found in deposits large enough to make mining profitable. China mines and refines the overwhelming majority of the world’s rare earth minerals and produces most of the global supply of magnets. The passage correctly notes that this dependence on a single supplier creates a “highly fragile” supply chain and thus a significant VULNERABILITY.
