What are Winning Words?
During the past 35 years I have helped students master the vocabulary they need to prepare for the SAT. Each of the Winning Words described and illustrated on this site is a “winner” because it has appeared and often reappeared on recent SATs. My posts use pictures and real test examples to help students learn challenging “SAT words” and then answer difficult vocabulary in context questions.
Both free and paid subscribers have access to these daily words which are taken from ongoing, current SAT tests.
What are the Special Insights?
The vocabulary in context questions are followed by a series of 10 – 12 critical reading passages. My Special Insights feature is a totally unique approach to helping students prepare for these challenging questions. SAT test writers frequently repeat critical reading passages. This replication has enabled me to locate and analyze a large number of critical reading passages.
Each post will provide students with a carefully crafted summary of the main ideas in a key critical reading passage. The Special Insights from these summaries will provide students with a significant advantage when they encounter these passages on their tests. What are the Key APUSH Terms, Trends, and Topics Posts?
The 3 hour and 15-minute APUSH exam poses a formidable challenge. I understand why many students feel confused about what content to study and anxious about how to write free-response essays.
First and foremost, always keep in mind that the exam will not test specific names, dates, and places. Instead, APUSH questions focus on key terms, trends, and topics. I have divided the APUSH curriculum into three major chronological periods: 1491 – 1800, 1800 – 1898, and 1898 – Present. Each period contains short essays devoted to key terms, trends, and topics that are regularly tested on the APUSH exam. Taken together, these essays will provide a unique and efficient review of the material you actually need to know to earn a high APUSH score.
What are the Annotated LEQ Essays?
Many students believe the Long Essay Question (LEQ) is the most difficult part of the exam. When you finally reach the question, you will have been answering multiple-choice questions and writing free-response essays for 2 hours and 35 minutes. You will be tired and eager to finish.
Unfortunately, many teachers neglect LEQs. Plus, real responses to real questions are hard to find. The posts in this section provide sample annotated LEQ essays that I have written for my students. Each essay is a response to a real LEQ prompt. No other site contains provides this type of systematic guidance for answering LEQs.
