Short stories, poems, and novels are all ESTABLISHED or recognizable and accepted literary forms. Indeed, we have all studied these ORTHODOX or traditionally accepted types of literature.
But wait, all is not so clear. SAT test writers have created a large cluster of vocabulary in context questions based upon the unconventional work of Lydia Davis. Recognized as one of the most original minds in American fiction, Davis has created “intergeneric” or hybrid types of literature that do not fit into traditional categories. For example, her two sentence short stories are UNCLASSIFIABLE or hard to categorize.
Davis’s work has inspired other authors to explore new and often AMORPHOUS or formless types of literature. For example, Anne Carson’s work Float straddles the line between prose and poetry.
ESTABLISHED – recognized and accepted
ORTHODOX – conforming to what is generally and traditionally accepted
UNCLASSIFIABLE – hard to categorize
AMORPHOUS - formless
