What do the creation of decorative beads during the Middle Stone Age, the wearing of clothing during the Ice Age, and the frequency of using the noun “life” by contemporary writers have in common? The answer is absolutely nothing. But wait, this is the SAT! Recent vocabulary in context questions have linked all three of these examples to UBIQUITOUS because of their widespread use. Let me explain: The abundance or “plethora” of beads in Middle Stone Age beads in North Africa tells us that these artifacts were UBIQUITOUS. Similarly, clothing became UBIQUITOUS during the Ice Age as a defense against the cold and as a cultural statement of status. And finally, modern text corpora provide data proving that “life” is UBIQUITOUS because it ranks as the ninth most commonly used noun. These examples demonstrate that UBIQUITOUS is indeed UBIQUITOUS on the SAT!
