This key Period 7 term refers to the mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to cities in the Northeast and Midwest. The push of discrimination in the South and the pull of a booming Northern job market convinced about 1.5 million African Americans to participate in the GREAT MIGRATION between 1916 and 1970.
